Why does the motor oil SDS change with the brand?
Two oils of the same grade can have different sheets because the additives differ. Pennzoil Platinum Euro L 5W-30, revised Jul 24, 2026, lists no classification. Quaker State Euro 5W-40, revised May 22, 2026, lists reproductive toxicity Category 2 and carries a Warning signal word. Royal Purple Duralec Super 15W-40, dated May 26, 2015, is marked not classified. The grade on the bottle does not tell you what Section 2 says.
The sheets below carry dates from May 26, 2015 to Jul 24, 2026.

What should I read first on my sheet?
Read the full product name, because the viscosity grade does not pick the sheet. Of the three oils we read, Quaker State's lists reproductive toxicity Category 2 under Warning, Pennzoil's lists no classification and Royal Purple's is marked not classified. Section 2 tells you which case you are in, and Section 8 tells you whether the sheet lists an OSHA limit.
What does your sheet set off under OSHA?
| If your sheet says | What follows | Paragraphs |
|---|---|---|
| Section 2 lists any classification | Written program with chemical list, training, sheet access, labels. | (29 CFR 1910.1200(c), (e)(1), (f)(6), (g)(8), (h)(1); 1926.59) |
| Section 2 lists no classification | That sheet sets off none of these. The same name can carry another formula. | (29 CFR 1910.1200(c), (d)(1)) |
| Section 8 lists an OSHA exposure limit | The 1910.1000 tables, and Table 1 of 1926.55 in construction. | (29 CFR 1910.1000; 1926.55) |
