OSHA HazCom 2026 Deadlines (HCS 2024)
All four 29 CFR 1910.1200(j) compliance deadlines for the updated Hazard Communication Standard (primarily GHS Revision 7). These are the post-extension dates in force after the FR Doc. 2026-00653 (Jan 15, 2026), +4 months. The key date most sources get wrong: the employer substances deadline is now November 20, 2026, not July 20, 2026.
Four deadlines, phased by role and product type from 2026 to 2028. Missing the one that applies to you exposes each unlabeled container, missing SDS, or untrained worker to a separate citation — and HazCom is OSHA’s #2 most-cited standard (FY2025).
Which deadline applies to you?
Pick your role and product kind for the single in-force date that governs you, a live countdown, the exact 29 CFR 1910.1200(j) citation, and the first moves. Runs on the same engine as our full deadline lookup tool.
A company that is both a manufacturer and an employer — or handles both substances and mixtures — can face more than one of the four dates.

Original rule: 89 FR 44144 (May 20, 2024). Extension: FR Doc. 2026-00653 (Jan 15, 2026), +4 months. During the interim, parties may comply with the 2012 HCS, the 2024 HCS, or both.
Who does what by when
The dates split by role, not by company size. A manufacturer’s deadline is about what leaves the plant; an employer’s is about what happens on your site.
Manufacturers, importers, distributors
Substances by May 19, 2026 · mixtures by November 19, 2027
- Reclassify each hazardous chemical under the updated criteria and update the safety data sheet 1910.1200(d),(g)
- Ship containers with the updated label elements 1910.1200(f)(1)
- Re-issue an SDS to downstream customers when significant new information appears 1910.1200(g)(5)
Employers (your jobsite)
Substances by November 20, 2026 · mixtures by May 19, 2028
- Update workplace and secondary-container labels to match the new information 1910.1200(f)(6)
- Keep the new safety data sheets readily accessible in each work area 1910.1200(g)(8)
- Update the written hazard communication program and the chemical list 1910.1200(e)
- Retrain whenever a new physical or health hazard is introduced into the work area 1910.1200(h)(1)
A new-format label shows up before your deadline. Now what?
Nothing breaks. During the transition, parts may comply with the 2012 HCS, the 2024 HCS, or both, so a drum labelled to the updated criteria is legitimate long before November 20, 2026. What it does mean is that the hazard information in your workplace has just changed for that product: file the new SDS, check whether your secondary-container labels still match it, and if the chemical now carries a hazard your crew has not been trained on, that training is due when the chemical is introduced — not on the deadline. In practice the first new labels are your cue to start, because the last mixtures do not have to be reclassified until November 19, 2027, which means your inventory will be mixed for years.
HazCom 2026 deadline FAQ
What is the OSHA HazCom employer deadline in 2026?
Employers must be compliant with the updated Hazard Communication Standard (HCS 2024, primarily GHS Revision 7) for substances by November 20, 2026 (29 CFR 1910.1200(j)(2)(ii)). This date reflects the four-month extension finalized on January 15, 2026 (FR Doc. 2026-00653 (Jan 15, 2026), +4 months); the pre-extension date was July 20, 2026.
Did OSHA extend the HazCom 2024 deadlines?
Yes. A final rule published January 15, 2026 (FR Doc. 2026-00653 (Jan 15, 2026), +4 months) extended every original HCS 2024 deadline by four months. The dates on this page are the post-extension dates currently in force per the eCFR text of 29 CFR 1910.1200(j).
When is the HazCom deadline for chemical manufacturers?
Manufacturers, importers, and distributors must comply for substances by May 19, 2026 (29 CFR 1910.1200(j)(2)(i)) and for mixtures by November 19, 2027 (29 CFR 1910.1200(j)(3)(i)). There is no separate distributor date — manufacturers, importers, and distributors share these dates.
When is the final HazCom 2024 compliance deadline?
The last deadline is for employers handling mixtures: May 19, 2028 (29 CFR 1910.1200(j)(3)(ii)). After this date, full compliance with HCS 2024 (GHS Rev 7) is required across the board.
Can I still comply with the old 2012 HazCom standard?
Yes, during the interim transition period. Parties may comply with the 2012 HCS, the 2024 HCS, or both, until the applicable deadline above passes for their role and chemical type.
