A new chemical arrived today

Quick on-the-ground process: right label size, compliant label, QR for SDS, brief the crew, document the briefing.

Why this workflow

When a new product hits the site, three obligations start immediately: it must be properly labeled, its SDS must be accessible at the point of use, and any newly exposed workers must be informed of the new hazard. This workflow gets all three done in minutes so work isn't held up.

When you’re done, you’ll have

  • Container size matched and label format chosen
  • GHS label generated and applied
  • SDS QR or link available at point of use
  • Short toolbox talk done (or scheduled)
  • Training sign-in for the briefing

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to retrain everyone for one new chemical?

Not full retraining — but employees must be informed of the new hazard before or at the time of exposure (1910.1200(h)(1)). A short toolbox talk on the new product's hazards, with a sign-in, satisfies this.

The drum is labeled — do I still need a label on the smaller container I pour into?

Yes, unless the immediate-use exception applies (same worker, same shift, container under their control). Otherwise the secondary container needs a compliant workplace label.

What if the SDS didn't come with the shipment?

Request it from the manufacturer or distributor — they're required to provide it. Until it arrives, treat the product's hazards conservatively and keep proof that you requested the sheet.

Planning aid only — not legal advice. Confirm every determination against the current OSHA standard and your State-Plan's rules.

Save it to your SDS binder so crews can access it anytime

Get the Binder in Order Before the Inspector Arrives. Are You Ready?

OSHA does not give advance notice of inspections (29 CFR 1903.6). Get the binder in order before the opening conference, not during it.
