What OSHA asks of any SDS system, and how the free plan covers it
Free or paid, an SDS system is judged against the same four duties of the Hazard Communication Standard. On a construction site, 29 CFR 1926.59 makes the same requirements apply.
| 29 CFR | What the rule asks | What the free plan gives you |
|---|---|---|
| 1910.1200(e)(1)(i) | A list of the hazardous chemicals known to be present, using a product identifier that is referenced on the safety data sheet. | The chemical inventory, by jobsite, up to 50 products, each one tied to its sheet. |
| 1910.1200(g)(1) | A safety data sheet in the workplace for each hazardous chemical you use. | Upload the sheets you have, let the AI read them, and see which products still have no sheet. |
| 1910.1200(f)(6) | Every container in the workplace labeled with the product identifier and its hazards. | GHS workplace labels printed on Avery or Zebra stock, straight from the product record. |
| 1910.1200(g)(8) | Sheets readily accessible during each work shift, in the work area. Electronic access is allowed as long as nothing stands between the worker and the sheet. | A QR code on every container, the jobsite's SDS loaded onto the crew's phones, and SDS lookup that no plan ever locks. |
The written HazCom program that ties the four together, required by 1910.1200(e)(1), is generated and versioned on Starter.
Open on every plan, forever
Some things a crew or an inspector may need at any moment. No plan closes them, the free one included.
- SDS lookup: hazards, first aid, PPE29 CFR 1910.1200(g)(8) requires access during every work shift. Never gated, on any plan.
- QR codes and public container scan
- Worker access to written programs29 CFR 1910.38(b) — employees must be able to read the plan. Never gated.
- Full record export, any timeExport is never tied to your subscription. A regression test fails the build if anyone adds a check.
- 30-year retention on exposure records29 CFR 1910.1020 sets the duration. A billing plan does not.
- Subcontractor portalA sub invited by a general contractor never pays to hand over documents.
Where the free plan stops
The free plan holds 1 jobsite, 50 chemicals and 1 admin seat. When the work grows past that, Starter takes 3 jobsites, 300 chemicals and 2 admin seats for $69 a month, and it opens:

- Written HazCom program, versioned
- Emergency Action Plan
- Fire Prevention Plan
- Fall Protection Plan
- OSHA 300, 301 and 300A logs
- Privacy case handling
- 300A certification and posting window
- Training center and assignments
- Training certificates
- Toolbox talks with signatures and attendance
- Read proof on hazardous products
- Near-miss and hazard reporting
- PPE hazard assessment and certification
- Threshold alerts
- Audit trail
- Legal hold
- Litigation defense package
- Subcontractor document review
- PDF and spreadsheet reports
- Deadline alerts and escalation
- Login history and active sessions
