- Stand up a respiratory protection program
Stand up a respiratory protection program (1910.134)
Build a 1910.134 program from the ground up: medical clearance, the right fit-test method, the written program, and a fit-test log.
Why this workflow
Respirators look simple, but the 1910.134 sequence is strict: nobody wears one — even voluntarily — until they've been medically cleared, and fit testing can't happen before that clearance. This workflow builds the program in the legally required order so you don't have to redo it.
Run these tools in order
Each step opens a free tool. Work top to bottom for a clear outcome.
When you’re done, you’ll have
- Appendix-C medical evaluation issued before fit-testing
- Fit-test method selected (QLFT vs QNFT by APF)
- Written respiratory protection program completed
- Fit-test log started for each wearer
Frequently asked questions
Can a worker start wearing a respirator while the paperwork catches up?
No. Medical evaluation comes first, then fit testing, then use. Letting someone wear a respirator before medical clearance is one of the most common 1910.134 citations.
We only use dust masks voluntarily — are we off the hook?
Mostly, but not entirely. Voluntary use of filtering facepieces still requires you to provide the Appendix D information; voluntary use of other respirators triggers a medical evaluation and a minimal written program.
How often does this repeat?
Fit testing and training are at least annual; medical evaluation is repeated when conditions change — new hazards, a health change, or a physician's recommendation.
